Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has fulfilled his commitment to assist the families of Kenyans who were fatally shot during the public viewing of Raila Odinga’s body at Kasarani Stadium.

In a video posted on Monday, November 10, 2025, Sonko outlined the support he provided, including settling City Mortuary fees at Chiromo for Vincent Otieno Ogutu, covering casket costs, and personally helping with other burial arrangements. He also distributed Ksh 1,000 to each mourner who visited his residence during the mourning period.

Early in the morning, Ogutu’s family visited Sonko at his home to finalize burial preparations and settle expenses before returning to their home county in Migori. Sonko confirmed that he had similarly handled all related costs for Evans Onyango Miche, ensuring both families could focus on laying their loved ones to rest. The families expressed their gratitude, taking photos with Sonko and thanking him for his support.

“The last two bodies of the five victims, the late Vincent Otieno Ogutu and Evans Onyango Miche, just left Nairobi a few hours ago to their final resting places in Migori and Homa Bay counties, respectively,” Sonko stated.

He further pledged to pursue justice for the victims and hold those responsible accountable:

“After we finish the burial, the chairman will come, and we will plan to take the issue to court so we can pursue justice. I want these families to go safely. The Ksh 35,000 for Chiromo has been refunded, the caskets have been paid for, and I will continue to support these households. The families are now taken care of.”

The incident occurred during the Kasarani public viewing, which had been relocated from Parliament to Moi International Sports Centre due to an unexpectedly large turnout. A crowd breach at one of the gates prompted police to respond with tear gas and live bullets, resulting in chaos as mourners tried to escape. Five people tragically lost their lives during the event.
