A tragic incident has shaken Uganda’s capital after four young children were killed in a knife attack at a kindergarten in Kampala on Thursday, according to police.

Authorities identified the suspect as Okello Christopher Onyum, a 39-year-old man who allegedly gained access to the daycare facility by posing as a parent. The attack occurred at the Ggaba Early Childhood Development Programme school in Makindye Division.

Kampala police spokesperson Rachael Kawala confirmed the incident in an official statement.

“We confirm a tragic incident … where a male suspect brutally attacked and killed four juveniles,” she said.

Local reports indicate the suspect initially entered the school offices and briefly engaged with staff before stepping outside, locking the gate, and carrying out the attack. The victims were aged between two and three years old.

The incident sparked outrage among residents, with some attempting to apprehend the suspect as he tried to flee. Security forces intervened and arrested him, reportedly firing shots into the air to disperse the crowd.

Scenes outside the school showed distressed parents gathered near the premises, which has since been cordoned off by authorities, seeking information about their children.

Police say investigations are ongoing, and the motive behind the attack remains unclear. The incident has raised serious concerns about security measures in early childhood education facilities across the city.
