The Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli has called on police officers across Kenya to maintain firmness and discipline in their work, warning against being overly friendly with the public.

Speaking during a public address on Saturday, October 11, 2025, Atwoli emphasized that strict policing is key to maintaining law and order and curbing rising insecurity in various parts of the country.

“Police officers are the ones watching over the nation. A police officer must remain a police officer. If they become too friendly with the public, lawlessness will thrive,” Atwoli stated.

He cautioned officers against leniency, saying that a relaxed approach to law enforcement could embolden criminals.

Calls for IPOA to Support, Not Stifle Police Work

Atwoli also urged the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to give police officers more operational space and avoid excessive interference.

“Even IPOA must ease up on the police,” he remarked, adding that oversight should not translate into intimidation of officers performing their duties.

He argued that police require institutional backing to effectively handle increasing security challenges, particularly in volatile regions.

Firm Policing for Social Discipline

The veteran trade unionist reiterated that discipline in society can only be achieved through strong enforcement of the law, asserting that firm leadership and order are essential to stability in African contexts.

“If you don’t enforce discipline, you will face disorder right in your home,” he said, emphasizing the importance of a strong security presence in maintaining peace and safety.

Atwoli also praised police officers for their role in protecting leaders and citizens, noting that their work often goes underappreciated.

Personal Reflection

In a lighter moment, Atwoli introduced his wife to the audience, noting that she understands his demanding schedule and helps ensure his safety.

“That’s my wife — she knows my schedule and what keeps me going,” he said, drawing laughter from the crowd.
