After 20 years confined to a bed, 52-year-old Ibrahim Mungai is walking again, thanks to innovative treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).
According to an X post by KNH on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, Ibrahim became completely immobile in 2004 after tuberculosis of the spine, enduring decades of pain, isolation, and secondary health complications in his home in Kikuyu, Kiambu County. KNH’s multidisciplinary team took on his complex case, combining advanced spinal care with intensive rehabilitation, leading to a remarkable recovery that underscores the power of early intervention, specialized treatment, and perseverance.
“Even after years of immobility, hope is never lost,” the hospital stated.
This announcement follows another historic milestone at KNH, where doctors successfully restored a woman’s nose in Kenya’s first-ever zygomatic implant-retained nasal prosthesis surgery.
Dormitila Yula, 51, had spent eight years hiding her face after a small pimple in 2017 escalated into a painful medical ordeal. Multiple surgeries, infections, and a Squamous Cell Carcinoma diagnosis left her partially without a nose, affecting her confidence and daily life.
On September 10, 2025, KNH’s team performed a six-hour reconstructive procedure, creating a custom nasal prosthesis anchored by zygomatic implants titanium fixtures in the cheekbones designed to support a realistic nasal structure. The surgery restored not only Dormitila’s appearance but also her dignity and self-confidence.
“I can finally face the world,” Dormitila shared, reflecting the resilience, innovation, and transformative care at KNH.
Her treatment journey involved tests, reconstructive surgeries using skin from her forehead and bone from her rib, and multiple interventions to address persistent infections. She also underwent two major plastic and vascular surgeries, led by Drs. Adeline Vilembwa, Benjamin Wabwire, and Loice Kahoro, 33 radiotherapy sessions, and 40 days of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
These stories highlight KNH’s commitment to cutting-edge medical care, offering hope and life-changing outcomes for patients facing seemingly insurmountable challenges.
