A tragic accident in Georgia has claimed the life of high school teacher Jason Hughes, 40, after a prank carried out by his students went horribly wrong. Hughes was killed outside his home when he was accidentally run over while responding to a toilet paper prank, authorities said.

According to police reports, students had been tossing toilet paper over trees as part of the prank. Hughes, who knew about the joke and intended to surprise the students, stepped outside but slipped on rain-slicked ground. In an attempt to flee the scene, one of the students inadvertently ran him over with a car.

The student driver, identified as Jayden Ryan Wallace, 18, has been charged with vehicular homicide. However, Hughes’ family has publicly requested that the charges against Wallace and other students involved be dropped. Laura Hughes, Jason’s wife and fellow instructor at the school, told the New York Times that her husband was “excited and waiting to catch them in the act” and that the students were beloved by him.

In addition to the vehicular homicide charge, Wallace and four other students, all aged 18, face charges of criminal trespass and littering on private property. The family, however, is advocating for leniency, emphasizing that pursuing charges would contradict Jason Hughes’ lifelong commitment to mentoring and supporting students.

“This is a terrible tragedy, and our family is determined to prevent a separate tragedy from occurring, ruining the lives of these students,” Laura Hughes said.

The Hall County school district described Jason Hughes as “a passionate teacher, mentor and coach who was loved and respected by students and colleagues.” Community members have since set up a memorial in front of the school where Hughes taught and coached, honoring his dedication and impact on the lives of students.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the accident, though the family has made clear their support for dropping the charges.
