Siaya, Kenya – Siaya Governor James Orengo has accused President William Ruto of orchestrating turmoil within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), claiming the Head of State has taken control of the opposition party following the death of its founding leader, Raila Odinga, in October 2025.
Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, February 12, 2026, Orengo alleged that Ruto has been hosting meetings with ODM officials at State House and his Kilgoris home, effectively holding the party “in possession.”
“The problem in ODM is President Ruto. We are asking Ruto to let ODM go. Let ODM alone. He has not taken it hostage; he is in possession of the ODM party. He is convening meetings of ODM organs. Leave ODM alone,” Orengo said.
Defense of Edwin Sifuna
Orengo strongly rebuked the removal of ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna by the party’s NEC on Wednesday, insisting that Sifuna remains the legitimate SG.
“The Secretary General of Raila Odinga’s ODM Party is Edwin Sifuna,” Orengo declared.
He praised Sifuna’s loyalty and service, noting that he had stood by Raila during critical political moments and successfully managed party affairs through two general elections.
“During the entire life of Raila Odinga and during the period in which Edwin Sifuna was the secretary general, there is no single moment that Raila criticized Edwin Sifuna in public,” Orengo remarked.
Allegations Surrounding Raila’s Death
In a striking statement, Orengo suggested that Raila’s death at Devamatha Hospital in India was not a natural occurrence.
“The death of Raila Odinga…which is still a mystery to many of us… Those who bear responsibility for the death of Raila Odinga are out there. They are silent about it, but I hope that one day we will determine the circumstances in which Raila passed away,” he said.
ODM’s Internal Storm
The NEC announced that ODM Deputy Secretary General and Busia Woman Representative Catherine Omanyo will serve as acting SG until a substantive office holder is elected.
However, Sifuna has vowed not to vacate his position, maintaining that his ouster is illegal and politically motivated. He accused President Ruto of masterminding the move, linking it to re-election schemes.
“My ouster is a witch hunt for not supporting President William Ruto’s leadership. Nothing lawfully warrants my removal from the role I have held for nine years,” Sifuna said.
Conclusion
The escalating dispute underscores deep divisions within ODM as the party grapples with leadership changes and allegations of external interference. With Orengo defending Sifuna and raising questions about Raila’s death, and Sifuna himself refusing to step aside, ODM faces a turbulent period that could reshape its role in Kenya’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 General Election.
