An overwhelming wave of grief swept through Karen, Nairobi, on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, as thousands of mourners gathered outside the home of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga following the announcement of his death.

The revered opposition leader, affectionately known across the country as “Baba,” passed away earlier in the day while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kochi, southern India.

By mid-morning, Raila’s usually serene Karen estate had transformed into a scene of raw emotion and chaos, as supporters from across Nairobi and beyond flocked to pay their respects. Many donned the orange colours of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) — the political movement he founded — as they sang liberation songs and chanted his name.

Grief and Confusion Grip Supporters

Heart-wrenching scenes emerged both at the residence and online. Videos showed devastated supporters breaking down in tears, others collapsing in disbelief, and groups waving placards and portraits of the late statesman.

Security officers struggled to manage the surging crowd as some mourners pushed past barriers in a desperate attempt to access the compound.

Ida Odinga Overcome with Emotion

A deeply emotional Mama Ida Odinga, the late leader’s widow, briefly appeared to acknowledge the supporters. Accompanied by family members, including her daughter Winnie Odinga, she attempted to thank the crowd for their support. However, her voice was soon drowned out by chants of “Baba! Baba!”, as the atmosphere grew increasingly emotional.

The Odinga family has yet to release an official statement regarding funeral arrangements.
