The High Court has ordered the freezing of bank accounts belonging to Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi, his wife, children, and ten other individuals as part of a Ksh.813 million corruption investigation.
The orders were granted following an application by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), which is probing allegations of corruption and unexplained wealth linked to the funds. The account freeze will remain in place pending the hearing and determination of the EACC’s application.
This legal development comes on the heels of another setback for Governor Wamatangi, whose business premises near Nairobi’s Nyayo Stadium were demolished in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
According to witnesses, police officers arrived around midnight, using teargas and live rounds to disperse crowds before the demolition commenced. Several business owners reported that vehicles and property were damaged during the operation.
The affected premises were situated on land owned by Kenya Railways. The state corporation has plans to construct a new railway station near Nyayo National Stadium, along with a spur line connecting Nairobi Central Station through the Nyayo area, Kibera, and Talanta Sports City Stadium. The project aims to ease transportation during the upcoming AFCON tournament.
Kenya Railways stated that all encroachers on the land had been issued prior notices to vacate the railway corridor.
“Kenya Railways is in the process of evicting all encroachers as we repossess all the land identified for the above-mentioned development,” the corporation said in a statement.
The bank account freeze and the demolition underscore the mounting challenges facing Governor Wamatangi amid ongoing investigations into alleged financial irregularities and unresolved land disputes.
