Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has directed security officers to remain alert and proactive as the festive season approaches, emphasizing the critical role they play in public safety and traffic management.

Speaking on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at the Holy Family Minor Basilica in Nairobi during the National Joint Prayers and Thanksgiving Service for uniformed and disciplined services and their families, IG Kanja highlighted the importance of preparedness as the busy season begins following the national examinations.

Traffic Safety and Public Security

IG Kanja reminded officers of their responsibility in ensuring that motorists comply with traffic regulations to reduce road accidents, which typically rise during the festive period as many Kenyans travel to rural areas to celebrate with family.

Beyond road safety, the Inspector General emphasized the role of police in maintaining overall public security during festivities. Officers are expected to deter robbery, theft, and other security threats, providing a safe environment for communities to celebrate.

Commitment and Professionalism

IG Kanja also encouraged officers to remain steadfast and dedicated in serving the nation. In his address, he commended their commitment to often challenging and volatile duties and urged them to seek guidance and strength from faith, referencing the service’s theme, “God strengthens and keeps me secure.” He reinforced the importance of upholding the National Police Service motto, “Service with Dignity.”

Chaplaincy Guidance and Family Support

The service was presided over by Rt. Rev. George Muthaka, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Garissa and head of the Uniformed and Disciplined Services Chaplaincy. In his sermon, Bishop Muthaka praised officers for their selfless service and dedication throughout the year, stressing the importance of gratitude, respect for the public, and care for colleagues regardless of rank.

He further advised officers to prioritize family, noting that family support is essential during and after service, and encouraged them to educate their children to secure their future.
