Chicago, USA – As deepfake videos of American academic John Mearsheimer multiplied across YouTube, the international relations scholar embarked on a grueling fight to have them removed. His experience underscores the mounting challenges of combating AI-driven impersonation in an era where disinformation spreads faster than ever.
A Flood of Fabrications
In recent months, Mearsheimer’s office at the University of Chicago identified 43 YouTube channels pushing AI-generated content using his likeness. The fabricated clips depicted him making controversial remarks about geopolitical rivalries.
- One video, also shared on TikTok, falsely showed him commenting on Japan’s strained relations with China after Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi expressed support for Taiwan.
- Another lifelike clip, featuring a Mandarin voiceover, purported to show Mearsheimer claiming that U.S. credibility in Asia was weakening as Beijing surged ahead.
“This is a terribly disturbing situation, as these videos are fake, and they are designed to give viewers the sense that they are real,” Mearsheimer told AFP.
A Cumbersome Takedown Process
Mearsheimer’s office described YouTube’s reporting system as slow and cumbersome, requiring individual takedown requests for each video. Unless his name or image appeared in a channel’s title, description, or avatar, infringement reports could not be filed.
Despite months of effort, new AI channels continued to emerge, often slightly altering names such as “Jhon Mearsheimer” to evade detection.
After what Mearsheimer called a “herculean” effort, YouTube eventually shut down 41 of the 43 identified channels, but only after many deepfake clips had already gained traction.
The Broader AI Challenge

“AI scales fabrication itself. When anyone can generate a convincing image of you in seconds, the harm isn’t just the image. It’s the collapse of deniability. The burden of proof shifts to the victim,” said Vered Horesh of AI startup Bria.
YouTube responded by affirming its commitment to responsible AI use, noting that it enforces policies consistently. CEO Neal Mohan, in his 2026 annual letter, said the platform is working to reduce the spread of “AI slop” while expanding AI tools for creators.

Mearsheimer’s ordeal reflects a broader trend: professionals with public-facing profiles are increasingly targeted by AI-generated hoaxes. Recent impersonations have included:

To counter the impersonations, Mearsheimer announced plans to launch his own YouTube channel. Similarly, economist Jeffrey Sachs recently launched a channel to combat the “extraordinary proliferation of fake, AI-generated videos” of him.
“The YouTube process is difficult to navigate and generally is completely whack-a-mole,” Sachs said. “There remains a proliferation of fakes, and it’s not simple for my office to track them down.”
