Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho has assured Ikolomani residents in Kakamega County that they will directly share in the wealth from the recently discovered gold deposits, valued at Ksh680 billion by British firm Shanta Gold Limited.

Speaking to a local TV station on Thursday, November 13, 2025, Joho emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring that local communities are key stakeholders in the mining project, with a clear role in deciding how proceeds are utilized.

“There are two approaches: either landowners lease their land to the company or negotiate for an outright purchase, as seen in other regions. Beyond the landowners, the broader community will enter into a formal agreement with the investor,” Joho explained.

He outlined the benefit-sharing framework, noting that the community will elect representatives who will be officially recognized by the government through gazettement. Once recognized, the leaders can open a bank account to manage the community’s share.

“From the mine’s gross revenue, 1% will go directly to the community, separate from royalties, export levies, and mining development levies,” he said. Additionally, 10% of royalty proceeds will be allocated for development projects chosen and prioritized by the residents themselves.

Joho assured the public that their rights, particularly those of landowners around the mining zone, will be protected. He emphasized that no one will be displaced or disadvantaged without fair consultation and compensation.

“There will be negotiations to ensure landowners are protected and receive fair value for their property. Every step will involve consultation and proper compensation,” he added.

On exploration rights, Joho defended the government’s decision to grant Shanta Gold Limited the mandate to explore the region, noting that the Ksh680 billion estimate could be conservative.

“This is only part of the findings; ongoing research across the country may reveal even greater mineral potential. Progress in underground resource exploration continues,” he said, highlighting the government’s commitment to sustainable and inclusive resource management.
