American R&B star Kelis has spoken candidly about her experiences living in Kenya, describing the East African nation as both “one of the best countries on the continent” and a place that presents unique challenges for newcomers.
In a video shared on her Instagram on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, the Milkshake hitmaker offered practical insights for members of the diaspora considering relocating to Kenya.
“The Roads Will Take Your Car Out”
Kelis noted that while Kenya’s natural beauty is undeniable, infrastructure issues can make day-to-day life difficult.
“Some of the potholes will literally take your car out,” she said, adding that many speed bumps are unmarked and hard to see at night.
She also highlighted problems with drainage and waste management, saying,
“When it rains, it floods. And the trash system is awful — it doesn’t exist.”
The Cost of Living and Imports
The Grammy-nominated singer cautioned that maintaining an American lifestyle in Kenya can be “triple the price.” She pointed out that import and shipping costs are significantly high, and described the country’s car market as “a nightmare.”
“They’ll sell a 20-year-old car for over Ksh 8.4 million and still call it new,” she remarked.
“Still One of the Best Countries in Africa”
Despite her criticisms, Kelis clarified that her comments were not meant to discredit Kenya but to help others from the diaspora make informed decisions.
“This is not a comparison to America. Kenya is still one of the best countries in Africa, in my opinion,” she said.
Building a New Life in Naivasha
Kelis, who relocated to Kenya earlier this year, revealed in a June 2025 interview with Earn Your Leisure that she purchased 300 acres of farmland in Naivasha. She now runs operations as a farmer, entrepreneur, and rancher, embracing a self-sustaining lifestyle far removed from the glitz of Hollywood.
Her reflections have sparked conversations online about diaspora relocation, African development, and the realities of expat living on the continent.
