Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi hosted Egyptian Foreign Affairs Minister Badr Abdelatty in Nairobi on Monday, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to deepen bilateral relations, trade, and investment cooperation.

Water Cooperation and the Nile Basin

Discussions touched on the pressing issue of water scarcity, with Mudavadi emphasizing Kenya’s support for Africa-led, dialogue-based approaches within the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) framework.

Abdelatty echoed the importance of collaboration, stating that solutions must be based on “win-win situations” to ensure equitable use of shared water resources.

The NBI, an intergovernmental partnership of 10 countries including Kenya and Egypt, seeks to achieve sustainable development through the fair and cooperative management of the Nile Basin’s water resources.

Trade and Investment Priorities

Both leaders highlighted the need to encourage private-sector partnerships, diversify trade products, and fast-track the establishment of a Joint Business Council. The council is expected to serve as a platform for advancing shared prosperity and strengthening economic ties between the two nations.

Strategic Significance

The Nairobi meeting underscores Kenya and Egypt’s mutual interest in balancing resource management with economic growth. By aligning on water cooperation and trade diversification, the two countries are positioning themselves to play a stronger role in regional stability and prosperity.
