The Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) has issued a seven-day strike notice demanding the resignation of the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) board, citing long-standing labor disputes and fallout from a controversial, now-abandoned airport leasing deal.

In a letter dated September 23, KAWU Secretary General Moses Ndiema accused the KAA board of “incompetence” and failing to act in the country’s best interests, referencing the failed plan to lease Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to India’s Adani Group. Ndiema did not disclose the exact start date of the industrial action, saying the strike could begin any time once the notice expires.

The move threatens to disrupt operations at JKIA — one of Africa’s busiest aviation hubs — and other airports across Kenya. KAA has not yet commented on the planned strike.

Last year, JKIA workers staged a one-day strike over the proposed Adani deal, which Kenya later canceled after U.S. authorities indicted Adani Group executives for alleged bribery of Indian officials — accusations the conglomerate denies.

With tensions escalating, the aviation sector faces potential service interruptions if no resolution is reached within the union’s seven-day window.
