The Kenya Red Cross has confirmed that an adjacent building near the site of the 16-storey South C building collapse is under inspection after showing signs of potential structural failure.

In an update on Friday, January 2, 2026, the humanitarian organization said that search and rescue operations at the collapsed building continue into the night as emergency teams work tirelessly to account for anyone who may still be trapped. The inspection of the neighbouring structure is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of residents and emergency personnel.

“A building adjacent to the scene is under inspection after showing signs of potential collapse,” the Red Cross stated. The precaution comes after officials confirmed that four people are feared trapped in the rubble of the collapsed building.

Rescue Efforts Underway

William Sifuna, head of operations at the scene, told the media that rescue teams immediately responded to the disaster, prioritizing the safety of the trapped individuals while clearing debris that blocked nearby roads.

“Right now, we are suspecting that four people are trapped in the debris. As we continue with the rescue mission, the adjacent building has been affected, and we want to move the residents to safety. We are trying our very best to see who we can save, and we also want to clear the roads blocked by the debris,” Sifuna said.

The collapse caused widespread disruption in the busy commercial and residential area, raising urgent concerns about the safety of surrounding buildings.

Calls for Accountability

Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris condemned the incident, attributing the tragedy to negligence and poor oversight. She called for justice and compensation for the victims.

“There is no justification for rushing, shortcuts, or ignoring safety standards when human life is involved. This tragedy must be a wake-up call. Rogue investors and negligent professionals must be held fully accountable. Families who lose loved ones deserve justice and compensation. For now, our focus remains on rescue and saving lives. Accountability must follow, and it must be firm,” Passaris said.

Authorities continue to monitor the surrounding area while prioritizing rescue operations, highlighting the importance of strict adherence to building standards to prevent future tragedies.
