Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary, Dr. Korir Sing’oei, has confirmed the safe rescue and repatriation of three Kenyan nationals who had been trapped in Moscow, Russia.

In an update shared on his official X account on Saturday, September 27, 2025, Dr. Sing’oei announced that Shaquille Wambo, Pius Mwika, and Derick Njaga are safe and are being reunited with their families. The operation was coordinated through Kenya’s mission in Moscow, with support from Ambassador Peter Mathuki and the Foreign Affairs team.

“Pleased to inform of the rescue and repatriation of three Kenyans… The three are safe and on their way home to their families,” Dr. Sing’oei wrote.

The PS further assured the public that the government is actively engaging to secure the release of other Kenyans currently held as prisoners of war, emphasizing Kenya’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad.

Ongoing Concerns: Kenyan Athlete in Ukraine

The update follows a BBC report highlighting the plight of Evans Kibet, a 36-year-old Kenyan athlete now in captivity in Ukraine. In a video released by a Ukrainian army brigade, Kibet pleaded not to be returned to Russia, expressing fear for his life.

Kibet, who says he was deceived into joining the Russian army, shared his desperation to return home to his 16-year-old daughter. His family in Kenya has since expressed shock and deep distress after watching the footage, with his cousin Edith Chesoi describing the ordeal as “traumatizing.”

Government’s Commitment

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reiterated its dedication to working with international partners to secure the safe return of all affected Kenyan citizens.
