Nairobi, Kenya – Former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has officially declared his exit from active politics, announcing that he will now dedicate his time to promoting happiness and well-being in professional spaces.
Murungi made the announcement on Tuesday morning after being conferred with an honorary doctorate by Laikipia University, in recognition of his long record in public service and leadership.
A Transformative Political Journey
Murungi’s decision comes after more than three decades in elective politics, a journey he described as both demanding and transformative.
First elected in 1992, Murungi served in several high-profile roles, including Member of Parliament and Cabinet Minister during former President Mwai Kibaki’s administration. He later became Meru Senator in 2013 before winning the governorship in 2017. His tenure ended after losing the seat in the 2022 election to Governor Kawira Mwangaza.
Emotional Toll of Defeat
Speaking at the award ceremony, Murungi opened up about the emotional toll of his 2022 defeat, admitting that the loss nearly pushed him into depression.
“Politics had been my life for over 30 years, leaving me uncertain about life outside the arena,” he said.
Murungi revealed that the period led him to seek professional counselling and enroll in personal growth classes, a process that lasted nine months.
The ‘Happiness Crusade’
According to Murungi, the experience reshaped his outlook and inspired what he now calls a “happiness crusade” an initiative aimed at helping others, especially leaders, prepare for life beyond political office.
Moving forward, he said he would engage in “low-volume politics,” offering advice rather than seeking elective positions.
Speculation on Political Future
His remarks come amid speculation that he could stage a political comeback ahead of the 2027 elections, with some allies suggesting he might vie for the Senate again. Others, however, believe his exit creates room for younger leaders eager to take up elective roles.
Family Support
Murungi’s wife, Priscillah Murungi, welcomed the decision, saying the time had come for him to slow down and focus on other aspects of life outside the pressures of politics.
Conclusion
Kiraitu Murungi’s exit marks the end of an era for one of Kenya’s longest-serving politicians. His new focus on happiness and well-being reflects a personal transformation and offers a fresh perspective on leadership beyond politics.
