Liverpool manager Arne Slot has urged his players to break their recent losing streak, warning that his side “must not make a habit” of dropping points in matches they should be winning. The Premier League champions have now lost six of their last seven games, including four consecutive league defeats, sparking growing concern ahead of a crucial week for the club.

Liverpool’s poor form was compounded by a 3-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Crystal Palace midweek, where Slot fielded a young, inexperienced side a decision that drew widespread criticism. However, the Dutchman defended his selection, insisting that resting key players was necessary amid a spate of injury setbacks early in the season.

Injury Woes and Fixture Pressure

The Reds remain without Alisson Becker, Alexander Isak, and Jeremie Frimpong, while midfielder Ryan Gravenberch has only just returned to training following an ankle injury. Slot revealed that he was balancing squad rotation with upcoming high-stakes fixtures, including Aston Villa’s visit to Anfield on Saturday, Real Madrid’s Champions League trip on Tuesday, and a Premier League showdown with Manchester City next Sunday.

“It’s not about a lack of depth,” Slot said during his Friday pre-match press conference. “It’s about how the season has unfolded with injuries and player availability. We still have enough quality to compete, but I have to manage the players carefully that’s why I made the decisions I did.”

Villa’s Resurgence and Premier League Competition

Five games into the season, Aston Villa trailed Liverpool by 12 points, but the two sides now sit level on points separated only by goal difference as Unai Emery’s team has surged in form just as Liverpool’s decline began.

Slot pointed to Villa’s turnaround as proof of how quickly fortunes can shift in the Premier League, which he described as “the most competitive league in the world.”

“Apart from Arsenal, most teams are very close on points,” Slot observed. “That shows just how tough this league is. Normally, you don’t lose too many matches where you’ve created more chances than your opponent but it’s happened to us, and we must make sure it doesn’t become a pattern.”

Liverpool will look to end their slump at Anfield on Saturday, where home fans will expect a strong response before their European clash against Real Madrid just three days later.
