The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader, Rigathi Gachagua, has congratulated Malawi’s President-elect, Prof. Peter Mutharika, following his decisive election victory, hailing it as a milestone for democracy across the continent.
Mutharika secured re-election with 56.8% of the vote against incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera’s 33% in the September 16, 2025 polls. At 85, Mutharika now returns as Malawi’s 7th President, while Chakwera gracefully conceded defeat, pledging a peaceful transfer of power despite the country’s economic hardships.
In his statement, Gachagua praised Malawians for demonstrating resilience and democratic maturity. He emphasized that the election was not only a national triumph but also a continental declaration against dictatorship, corruption, and self-serving regimes.
He further lauded Chakwera for his concession, calling it a profound show of respect for the constitution and the will of the people.
Gachagua urged Kenyans to draw lessons from Malawi’s democratic process as the country prepares for the 2027 General Election. He called on citizens to reject fear and hopelessness, and instead reclaim their future through the ballot.
“Just like our Malawian brothers and sisters, we must embrace courage, reject cynicism, and reaffirm our sovereignty through democratic means,” he said.
