Manchester United parted ways with manager Ruben Amorim on Monday after 14 months in charge, igniting speculation over his replacement at Old Trafford. In the interim, under-18s coach Darren Fletcher has been placed in temporary charge as the club explores options for a caretaker or permanent manager to finish the season.
Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, United are now searching for their seventh permanent manager, and several high-profile candidates are reportedly under consideration.
Potential Successors:
Oliver Glasner – The 51-year-old Austrian led Crystal Palace to their first major trophy by winning the FA Cup last season. Glasner’s contract at Palace expires at the end of the campaign. Known for his tactical flexibility, he has predominantly deployed a three-man defence with wingbacks but has expressed a preference for a 4-4-2 formation.
Enzo Maresca – The 45-year-old Italian recently departed Chelsea following disagreements with the club hierarchy. Maresca won the UEFA Conference League and the Club World Cup in his first season at Stamford Bridge and has also been linked with Manchester City should Pep Guardiola step down.
Gareth Southgate – The former England manager, 55, has reportedly remained on United’s radar. However, it is unclear whether Southgate would be willing to return to club football after stepping down from international duty following Euro 2024.
Unai Emery – Since joining Aston Villa three years ago, the 54-year-old Spaniard has revitalised the club. Emery guided Villa to a notable Champions League campaign last season, and they are currently challenging Arsenal and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.
Darren Fletcher – Fletcher, 41, may use his interim stint to make a case for the permanent role. The former United midfielder has no senior managerial experience but could follow in the footsteps of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who secured the permanent job after impressing as caretaker.
Thomas Tuchel – The 52-year-old German is currently focused on leading England to a World Cup title but could be tempted by the Old Trafford position. Tuchel previously managed PSG, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich, and his experience at top European clubs remains highly regarded.
Mauricio Pochettino – Former Tottenham, PSG, and Chelsea boss, 53, is currently managing the US national team. United have been linked with him previously, and he could be available for a post-World Cup appointment.
Andoni Iraola – The 43-year-old Spaniard has impressed since taking charge at Bournemouth in 2023, achieving club-record Premier League points in consecutive seasons. Notably, Bournemouth have secured memorable results at Old Trafford under his management, including two 3-0 wins and a dramatic 4-4 draw last month.
With a mix of experienced managers and emerging talent, United face a critical decision as they seek stability and renewed success following Amorim’s departure.
