A legal dispute has emerged between Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera and Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula over alleged defamatory remarks concerning the MP’s health.

Nabwera has filed a defamation lawsuit at the High Court, claiming that Savula publicly suggested he is living with HIV an assertion Nabwera vehemently denies. According to court filings, the legislator alleges that the statements were made openly and subsequently circulated widely, exposing him to stigma, reputational damage, and public scrutiny. He contends that the allegations were false, reckless, and intended to discredit him politically and socially.

The MP argues that the claims have caused significant emotional distress and threaten to erode public confidence in his leadership.

In his suit, Nabwera is seeking a court order for a medically supervised HIV test for both himself and Savula, to be conducted transparently under the oversight of qualified medical professionals, with media coverage present. He says the testing is aimed at conclusively disproving the allegations and putting an end to what he describes as malicious and irresponsible claims.

Through his lawyer, Danstan Omari, Nabwera further stated that the case highlights the broader risks of politicizing sensitive health information, warning that such actions perpetuate stigma and undermine human dignity.

The matter is set to be heard in the High Court as the legislator pursues legal recourse to safeguard his reputation and challenge the public dissemination of false health claims.
