Nairobi is set to take center stage this weekend as the city hosts the opening leg of the HSBC World Rugby SVNS 2 tournament at the Nyayo National Stadium. Governor Johnson Sakaja has extended a warm welcome to visiting teams, officials, and fans, describing the event as a defining moment for both the capital and Kenya’s rugby ambitions.
A Historic Sporting Occasion
Governor Sakaja emphasized that hosting the curtain raiser of the second-tier world series reflects growing confidence in Kenya’s organizational capacity and its rising stature in international rugby.
“It is a great pleasure and honor to welcome the world to the City under the Sun, Nairobi, as we host the inaugural HSBC Sevens Tour Tournament, a historic moment not only for our city but for the entire rugby fraternity,” he said.
He praised the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) and tournament partners for their extensive preparations, assuring visiting teams of a vibrant and well-coordinated experience.
Shujaa and Lionesses Lead the Charge
Kenya’s men’s rugby sevens team, Shujaa, and their women’s counterpart, the Lionesses, will carry the hopes of the home crowd. Both teams are determined to set the pace in Division 2 and push for swift promotion back to the top tier.
Governor Sakaja paid tribute to Kenyan fans often dubbed rugby’s “eighth player” urging them to fill Nyayo Stadium and power the teams forward.
