The 2025 Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) officially kicked off on Monday, marking another milestone in Kenya’s transition to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) system.

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) confirmed that all preparations have been completed to ensure the exams run smoothly and transparently across the country.

Speaking while supervising the opening of exam materials at Kibra Deputy County Commissioner’s office on Monday morning, Education Principal Secretary Prof. Julius Bitok expressed confidence in the ministry’s preparedness.

“We are pleased to announce that we’re ready to begin the KPSEA and KJSEA exams. It’s the first time we are having 1.1 million KJSEA learners who will be transitioning to Grade 10,” Prof. Bitok said.

He added that all relevant stakeholders had been mobilized to ensure the assessments are conducted efficiently and fairly.

“All learners and examinations are ready. The government has released all necessary funds to support this process, so there should be no excuse for delays or challenges in administration,” he noted, urging teachers and invigilators to uphold the highest standards of integrity throughout the exercise.

Prof. Bitok also assured that the country has sufficient capacity in secondary schools to accommodate the current cohort transitioning from Grade 9 to Grade 10.

Meanwhile, KNEC Chief Executive Officer David Njengere reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to maintaining quality and consistency in the ongoing CBC assessment structure.

“Under CBC, assessments are conducted in Grades 4, 7, and 8, while Grade 9 learners already have 40% of their marks. These exams will contribute the remaining 60%,” Dr. Njengere explained.
“We are confident of delivering a credible and fair assessment to the 3.4 million learners sitting for these exams.”

The start of the KPSEA and KJSEA assessments follows the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations, which began on October 21, 2025, further underscoring the country’s full transition from the 8-4-4 system to the CBC model.

The KPSEA exams will run from October 27 to 29, while the KJSEA exams will continue until November 3, 2025.
