Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa has sounded the alarm over Kenya’s deepening unemployment crisis after his office received an overwhelming 576 applications for a single entry-level vacancy.

The position, advertised as Photographer and Video Editor, was candidly described as requiring work in volatile and unpredictable environments, including documenting public interest activities under police pressure, tear gas, and politically charged situations. Despite these conditions, the Senator revealed that 533 male applicants and 43 female applicants submitted applications before the deadline.

“Nearly 600 qualified young Kenyans applied for a single job opportunity. When 600 young people are battling for one vacancy, how can the government claim success?” Senator Karungo stated on Thursday, March 5, 2026.

What the Response Reveals

The Senator emphasized that the overwhelming interest in the role reflects the desperation among Kenya’s youth, many of whom are qualified but struggling to find meaningful employment.

He noted that the willingness of hundreds of applicants to work under unpredictable and sometimes hostile conditions underscores the extent of hopelessness among jobseekers.

“It speaks volumes that these circumstances did not discourage about 600 young Kenyans,” he added.

Building a Talent Pool

While acknowledging that only one candidate will secure the advertised role, Senator Karungo pledged to retain all applicants in a talent pool and explore opportunities to support and engage them in future.

“Your applications will remain part of a valuable talent pool, and my office will continue to explore opportunities to engage and support you wherever possible,” he assured.

Government Programs Under Scrutiny

The Senator criticized existing government initiatives aimed at tackling unemployment, arguing that they have failed to deliver meaningful results.

“The information in front of us is clear: the programs are failing the very generation for which they were intended. Kenya’s youth deserve meaningful opportunities,” he said, calling for an immediate reconsideration of the national youth employment policy.

Key Takeaway

The incident highlights a sobering reality: Kenya’s unemployment crisis is worsening, with thousands of young professionals competing for scarce opportunities. Senator Karungo’s experience serves as a stark reminder that policy reform and innovative job creation strategies are urgently needed to restore hope among the country’s youth.
