Kirinyaga County, Kenya – Residents of Nyangati Ward, Mwea East Sub-County, are voicing growing concerns over escalating insecurity following the brutal killing of Gabriel Njogu, aged 44. Njogu’s body was discovered in rice fields in the Rurii area with severe neck injuries, sparking fear and outrage among locals.
Community Shock and Grief
Village elder Johnson Magondu said Njogu was last seen near a local motel, while his cousin Bernard Muriithi recalled speaking to him shortly before his death.
“We found his body a few metres from where he lived. I couldn’t believe it. Just last night, he wished me well as I was selling eggs at the trading centre,” Muriithi said, visibly shaken.
Residents described Njogu’s killing as the most disturbing incident yet in a community already grappling with rising insecurity.
Escalating Insecurity
Locals say cases of livestock theft and daytime break-ins have become increasingly common.
“They are even digging holes into our houses to steal when we are out farming or taking children to school. But killing innocent Gabriel Njogu is the worst,” said Mary Muthoni, a resident.
Official Confirmation
Nyangati Location Chief Immaculate Wanjiru Njoka confirmed that Njogu sustained neck injuries and was discovered by a farmer tending to his rice fields.
Police have since launched investigations into the incident. Njogu’s body was moved to Kibugi Mortuary, where a postmortem examination is expected to be conducted.
Conclusion
The murder of Gabriel Njogu has heightened fears in Nyangati and surrounding villages, underscoring the urgent need for stronger security measures. As investigations continue, residents are calling for swift action to restore safety and protect communities from further violence.
