The family of the late veteran Kenyan leader Raila Amolo Odinga has conveyed heartfelt thanks to Kenyans, world leaders, and officials for their support following his passing. The message was shared on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, a day that would have marked Odinga’s 81st birthday.

Raila Odinga, born in 1945, passed away on October 15, 2025. His burial was one of the most widely followed events in Kenya’s history, drawing both national and international attention and underscoring his enduring influence on the country’s political and social landscape.

National and International Support

In a post on X, Raila Odinga Junior, who also serves as the family spokesperson, highlighted the profound support the family received during their time of grief.

“In Loving Memory of Rt Hon Raila Amolo Odinga CGH — A Message from the Odinga Family,” he wrote, acknowledging the assistance of President William Ruto, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, and the wider government. He also commended the funeral committees responsible for coordinating a dignified farewell for Baba.

The statement expressed particular gratitude for international support, highlighting the role of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose government facilitated the prompt return of Odinga’s body to Kenya. Retired leaders, including former Presidents Uhuru Kenyatta, Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria, Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana, Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania, and African Development Bank President Akinwumi Adesina, were also acknowledged for traveling long distances to pay their respects.

Recognition of Local Leaders and Medical Teams

The family also thanked local leaders and officials who played a key role in the funeral arrangements. Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, Siaya Governor James Orengo, as well as parliamentary leaders including Speakers Moses Wetangula and Amason Kingi, were commended for their coordination and support.

Medical teams at Devamatha Hospital in India and Nairobi Hospital, who provided care for Baba Odinga, were recognised for their professionalism and dedication.

Gratitude to the Kenyan People

The Odinga family extended their appreciation to the people of Kenya, noting that messages of love, support, and condolences provided comfort during a difficult time. Members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), friends, and media houses were also thanked for helping preserve and celebrate Odinga’s legacy.

“We cherish all the messages of support, love, and kindness. It brings us peace to know how deeply Baba touched the lives of many,” the family concluded.
