The newly appointed Orange Democratic Union (ODM) Secretary General, Catherine Nakhabi Omanyo, has urged party members to embrace unity, consistency, and dialogue, stressing that internal differences should not undermine the institution’s core values.

Upholding ODM Principles

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV on Thursday, Omanyo emphasized that while democracy allows for diverse opinions, ODM must remain guided by the principles laid down by its founder, the late Raila Odinga.

She criticized leaders who frequently change positions, warning that such inconsistency confuses supporters and erodes public trust.

“You cannot say one thing today and the opposite tomorrow, then expect people to take you seriously. ODM is bigger than any one person, it must be defended at all times, especially when the political environment becomes hostile,” she said.

Omanyo added:

“ODM is an institution, not an individual. Loyalty means standing with its ideals even when it’s not easy.”

Engagement with Government

Echoing Raila’s long-standing stance, Omanyo insisted that dialogue with the ruling administration should not be mistaken for weakness. She argued that engagement is essential for resolving issues affecting ordinary citizens, such as compensation for victims of protests.

“Engagement is not betrayal. It’s about creating space for solutions,” she explained.

Internal Party Disputes

Her remarks come amid internal wrangles following the ouster of Edwin Sifuna as ODM Secretary General. Sifuna was accused of failing to adhere to party resolutions and of expressing views that contradicted ODM’s official positions.

Sifuna, alongside senior ODM figures including James Orengo and Babu Owino, has disputed the changes, describing his removal as illegal and a political witch hunt for not supporting President William Ruto’s leadership.

Conclusion

Omanyo’s call for unity and dialogue highlights ODM’s ongoing struggle to balance internal democracy with institutional discipline. As the party navigates leadership disputes, her emphasis on consistency and engagement signals a renewed effort to reinforce ODM’s identity and focus on serving the interests of Kenyans.
