A police officer has been arrested following the fatal shooting of a woman during a night vigil in honour of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in Homa Bay County.
The victim, identified as Lucy Oketch, was killed near the entrance of Homa Bay Police Station on Thursday night as she was heading home.
According to County Police Commander Lawrence Koklem, the incident occurred when a group of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) supporters, who had earlier participated in a candlelight procession, marched through the streets of Homa Bay before proceeding toward the police station.
Koklem said that tensions escalated when some individuals in the crowd began hurling stones into the station compound. In response, an officer assigned to the Occurrence Book (OB) desk opened fire as the crowd advanced toward the premises.
A stray bullet struck Oketch, who was rushed to the Homa Bay County Referral Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
The officer responsible was immediately arrested and is being held at the same station. He is expected to be arraigned in court on Tuesday as investigations continue into the shooting.
The incident has sparked public concern, with calls for restraint and professionalism in managing emotionally charged gatherings during the national mourning period.
