Malindi, Kilifi County – President William Ruto has called on Kenyan youths to take full advantage of government programmes designed to empower them, saying his administration is delivering on the promises made during the campaigns.

Speaking at the NYOTA Project Business Start-Up Capital Disbursement Forum held at Buntwani Waterfront Park, Malindi, the President reaffirmed his government’s commitment to uplifting disadvantaged youths who did not progress in their studies.

Ksh.252 Million Disbursed to Young Entrepreneurs

During the forum, a total of Ksh.252 million was disbursed to 5,040 young entrepreneurs drawn from 60 wards across three counties:

  • Kilifi County – 35 wards
  • Tana River County – 15 wards
  • Lamu County – 10 wards

In the first phase, each beneficiary will receive Ksh.25,000, with Ksh.22,000 credited directly to support business operations and Ksh.3,000 deposited into a Haba na Haba Savings Account managed by the National Social Security Fund (NSSF).

In the second phase, beneficiaries will receive an additional Ksh.25,000, bringing the total start-up capital support to Ksh.50,000 per entrepreneur.

Empowering Youths Through Skills and Jobs

President Ruto emphasized that the programme is not only about financial support but also about equipping young people with skills to grow businesses, access contracts, and become job creators.

“This programme will enable our young people to become job creators and strengthen the country’s workforce through skills development,” he said.

Deputy President Highlights Broader Programmes

Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki highlighted other major initiatives being undertaken by the government, including:

  • Affordable housing projects
  • Digital jobs
  • Overseas employment opportunities

He noted that these programmes are bridging the employment gap and providing sustainable livelihoods for Kenyan youths.

Kindiki also lauded the President’s decision to waive PAYE for low-income earners, saying it will provide significant relief for workers across the country.

Conclusion

The NYOTA Project marks a significant step in Kenya’s youth empowerment agenda, combining financial support, skills development, and job creation. With the government’s continued investment in programmes targeting young people, the initiative is expected to foster entrepreneurship, reduce unemployment, and strengthen Kenya’s economic future.
