The Princess of Wales, Catherine, has sounded the alarm over what she describes as an “epidemic of disconnection” caused by the overuse of smartphones, computers, and digital devices — warning that modern technology is quietly eroding family bonds and emotional wellbeing.
In an essay titled “The Power of Human Connection in a Distracted World”, published through the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, Catherine cautioned that while digital tools promise to keep people connected, they often achieve the opposite.
“While digital devices promise to keep us connected, they frequently do the opposite,” she wrote. “We’re physically present but mentally absent, unable to fully engage with the people right in front of us.”
Collaborating with Prof. Robert Waldinger of Harvard Medical School, the princess highlighted research showing that warm, healthy relationships within families are crucial for lifelong mental and physical health. Yet, she noted, current social habits — such as scrolling through phones during family dinners or responding to emails while playing with children — are weakening those essential connections.
“When we check our phones during conversations or scroll through social media during family dinners, we’re not just distracted — we’re withdrawing the basic form of love that human connection requires,” she emphasized.
Catherine’s essay comes as part of her ongoing early years education campaign, aimed at promoting emotional development and strong family relationships in childhood. She warned that today’s children face a unique challenge, growing up in a world “immersed in digital technology,” which can hinder their ability to form meaningful human bonds.
“We’re raising a generation that may be more ‘connected’ than any in history while simultaneously being more isolated, more lonely, and less equipped to form warm, meaningful relationships,” she wrote.
The princess’s remarks also echo sentiments shared by Prince William, who recently revealed in an Apple TV+ interview that none of their three children are allowed to have smartphones.
Launched in 2021, the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood continues to spearhead research and public awareness on the importance of nurturing emotional wellbeing in the first years of life — a theme Catherine says is more vital now than ever in a digitally distracted world.
