Raila Odinga Junior has paid an emotional tribute to his late father, former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga, describing him as a man of immense wisdom, compassion, and enduring influence.
Speaking on Friday, October 17, 2025, during the national farewell ceremony, Raila Junior reflected on the cherished memories he shared with his father — particularly their shared love for football and countless hours spent watching Arsenal matches together.
“I will miss watching Arsenal matches with you,” Raila Junior said, his voice heavy with emotion.
He went on to express deep gratitude for his father’s constant love, mentorship, and moral guidance.
“Thank you for your wisdom, your guidance, and your unwavering love,” he added.
Raila Junior reaffirmed his commitment to uphold the principles and ideals that defined his father’s public life.
“I am my father’s son, and I will continue to fight for the values he believed in — justice, fairness, and service to others.”
Raila Odinga: The Sportsman Beyond Politics
While Raila Odinga is best remembered for his political leadership and struggle for democracy, he was also a lifelong sports enthusiast whose passion for football was as genuine as it was influential.
For decades, Raila was a familiar figure in stadiums across Kenya — cheering on the Harambee Stars or passionately supporting his beloved Gor Mahia FC, where he served as patron for many years. His presence at local matches, especially the iconic Mashemeji Derby between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards, embodied his deep connection to the spirit of Kenyan football.
As Gor Mahia’s patron, Raila Odinga was more than a symbolic leader; he was an active supporter and benefactor. Just weeks before his passing, he pledged KSh 10 million to support the club’s 2025/2026 season, continuing a tradition of tangible support that included a KSh 1 million reward to the team for their progress in the CAF Champions League the previous year.
A Devoted Arsenal Fan
Raila’s football passion also extended to the global stage through his unwavering support for Arsenal FC in the English Premier League. Interestingly, he once supported Manchester United before switching allegiance to Arsenal upon Arsène Wenger’s appointment — drawn by the manager’s attacking philosophy and disciplined approach to the game.
In his younger days, Raila actively played football, featuring for Luo Union FC and later Bunge FC during his time as the Member of Parliament for Lang’ata Constituency.
Raila Odinga’s life — on and off the pitch — reflected discipline, teamwork, and resilience, qualities that defined not only his love for the game but also his leadership and service to Kenya.
