The late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s long-serving bodyguard and security aide, Maurice Ogeta, has been appointed to a senior role in the Mombasa County Government, marking a new phase in his public service career.
In a statement issued on Thursday, January 8, 2026, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir announced several appointments within the Executive Office of the Governor following the creation of new positions by the Mombasa County Public Service Board, in accordance with the law. Ogeta has been named Advisor, Security Affairs, a position the governor said reflects his extensive experience and institutional knowledge gained over years of service at local, regional, and international levels.
Ogeta is widely recognised for his long and dedicated service as a trusted security aide to ODM leader Raila Odinga, one of Kenya’s most influential political figures. In announcing the appointment, Governor Nassir cited Ogeta’s background and professional track record as key considerations.
“The appointment is informed by his many years of experience and deep institutional knowledge built at local, regional and global levels, including his service to our Founding Party Leader, H.E. Raila Odinga, C.G.H.,” the statement read.
In his new role, Ogeta will advise the county leadership on security matters as Mombasa seeks to enhance public safety, safeguard tourism, and strengthen overall urban security management.
The appointment comes months after President William Ruto publicly pledged government support for Ogeta in recognition of his loyalty and dedication to the late ODM leader. Speaking on Sunday, October 19, 2025, during Raila Odinga’s burial ceremony at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) in Bondo, the President praised Ogeta and other members of Raila’s close security team for their steadfast service over the years.
“I must thank his security people, Maurice Ogeta especially, for standing with Raila always. I remember him in our days in ODM when he would even wipe our shoes when we came late for campaigns,” President Ruto said. He further assured that the government would look after those who had worked closely with Raila Odinga, noting their role in supporting one of the country’s most prominent political leaders.
In the same announcement, Governor Nassir also appointed Ken Ambani as Advisor on Creative Arts. The governor said Ambani’s extensive experience and first-hand understanding of the creative sector would be instrumental in revitalising Mombasa’s creative industry and expanding opportunities for artists, youth, and the wider local economy.
