The 2026 edition of the LOOP Safari Gravel Series is set to start this Saturday at the Limuru Country Club, drawing a record 822 cyclists for the season opener. The series, known for its challenging off-road courses, combines elite competition, recreational cycling, and adventure tourism across Kenya’s scenic terrains.
Among the headline participants are Ugandan cycling stars Jordan Schleck and Mary Aleper, both of whom have established themselves as dominant figures in regional gravel racing. Schleck, who has won five of the eight races held over the past two seasons including three victories last year expressed excitement ahead of the Limuru opener:
“I’m really looking forward to the opening leg in Limuru. The LOOP Safari Gravel Series has grown tremendously, and it’s always exciting to line up against such a strong field. I’ve prepared well for this season and I’m hoping to enjoy the race and see how it unfolds. I am quite familiar with the series having won in five out of eight races and I am hoping to bank on my experience to get a win in the opening leg,” said Schleck.
The Limuru event features three race distances to cater to different rider categories:
- 100km elite race – 115 cyclists registered
- 50km race – 366 cyclists registered
- 20km recreational race – 235 cyclists registered
Team competition is also expected to be intense. Monica Jelimo will lead Team Ariya Finergy Solar Vortex as captain for the first time. Jelimo, who finished second in last year’s women’s standings, said her team of 21 riders is well-prepared and motivated for the season opener:
“Our preparations have gone well and the team is ready for the season. Limuru is a beautiful place to ride, and we are hoping the weather will be favourable so we can enjoy the race and start the season strongly,” she said.
Team Ariya Finergy Solar Vortex narrowly missed out on the overall team title in 2025, finishing second, and Jelimo believes this season’s squad gives them a strong opportunity to contend for the 2026 title.
The LOOP Safari Gravel Series promises another thrilling season, highlighting Kenya as a premier destination for gravel cycling while giving both elite and recreational riders the chance to test their endurance on some of the country’s most iconic routes.
