A Romanian criminal network responsible for trafficking, grooming, and sexually abusing ten women in Dundee has been sentenced to lengthy prison terms following one of Scotland’s most disturbing exploitation cases.

The group led by 38-year-old Marian Cumpanasoiu targeted vulnerable women between the ages of 16 and 30, supplying them with drugs before coercing them into sexual activity at flats across the city between 2021 and 2022.

Following convictions at the High Court in Glasgow, Cumpanasoiu was handed a 24-year sentence, while Cristian Urlateanu, 41, received 20 years. Remus Stan, 35, was jailed for 12 years, Cataline Dobre, 45, for 10 years, and Alexandra Bugonea, 35, for eight years.

Exploitation masked as “friendship”

Prosecutors revealed that the gang manipulated victims through addiction, offering them free crack cocaine and alcohol before subjecting them to repeated sexual violence. Judge Lord Scott condemned the offenders for “preying on the vulnerable” and attempting to discredit victims based on their lifestyles.

“By providing an endless supply of drugs, you deepened their vulnerabilities and exploited them for sexual and financial gain,” Lord Scott said. “You may have assumed that no one cared for these women but you were wrong.”

Police Scotland’s investigation uncovered that the gang not only trafficked women from Eastern Europe but also targeted local victims, grooming them with promises of friendship, gifts, and substances. Some offenders even held legitimate employment, including delivery work, while continuing their predatory activities.

Ringleader described as a “smirking pimp”

Cumpanasoiu, described in court as a “winking, smirking pimp” with a “predatory nature,” was convicted of ten counts of rape and human trafficking offences, including forcing a woman into prostitution and operating a brothel.

His co-conspirators faced multiple rape convictions, with Bugonea the only female member of the gang found guilty of taking part in assaults and hosting “sex parties” at her flat. Despite claiming she believed the women were “friends,” testimony revealed that she participated in and facilitated abuse.

Several members of the group had fled Scotland before their trial but were extradited from Belgium and the Czech Republic. Jurors heard harrowing evidence during the six-week trial, including mobile phone footage showing the gang mocking victims and celebrating their crimes.

Sentences and deportation likely

Lord Scott described Cumpanasoiu as “a continuing danger to women,” citing his lack of remorse and continued attempts to deflect responsibility. His 24-year sentence includes a four-year extension for supervision upon release.

All five offenders were placed on the sex offenders register and handed indefinite non-harassment orders preventing any contact with their victims.

The court indicated that the Home Office will likely pursue deportation proceedings once the sentences have been served.
