Seven irregular migrants from sub-Saharan Africa have been found dead on a beach east of Libya’s capital, Tripoli, the Libyan Red Crescent reported on Sunday. Among the deceased were three children, according to a worker from the organisation, who added that additional bodies may yet be discovered.

The Libyan Red Crescent issued a statement confirming the recovery of the bodies from Qasr al-Akhyar, a coastal town approximately 73 kilometres east of Tripoli. Details surrounding the deaths remain unclear.

“We recovered seven bodies from a beach in Qasr Al-Akhyar belonging to irregular migrants,” the statement read.

Libya serves as a key transit point for thousands of migrants attempting to reach Europe each year. The perilous journey across the Mediterranean frequently results in deaths, highlighting the ongoing risks faced by irregular migrants in the region.

According to the UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM), more than 2,100 irregular migrants died or went missing while attempting the dangerous Mediterranean crossing to Europe in 2025.

“The tragic deaths underscore the urgent need for safer migration pathways and coordinated international humanitarian response,” IOM said in a recent report.

The discovery of these bodies adds to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Libya, where migrants face exploitation, harsh conditions, and the constant threat of death during their journey.
