A section of Siaya Members of County Assembly (MCAs) has urged leaders from the Luo community to engage in constructive dialogue and reach a consensus on who should take up the mantle of leadership within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) following the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Their call comes after the ODM National Executive Committee (NEC) appointed Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga as the party’s interim leader.

Addressing the media on Friday, October 17, 2025, Nominated MCA Cynthia Ndar, North Uyoma MCA Washington Booker Bonyo, and North Sakwa MCA Oliver Arika emphasized the importance of unity during this transition period, warning against individuals seeking to exploit the situation for personal or political gain.

“What Baba would have wanted is for us to remain united. Raila may not have named a direct successor, but he mentored many people, including the younger generation. I’m confident that, naturally, a leader will emerge,” said Ndar.

She acknowledged that while no one may fully fit Raila’s shoes, his vision of justice, unity, and national transformation must continue.

“It’s time to stand together as a Luo nation and move forward in building the Kenya Raila dreamed of,” she added.

On his part, Booker Bonyo reflected on Raila’s lifelong sacrifices, urging calm and purpose among mourners.

“Leaders are chosen by God, and we shall find one among us. We have strong leaders like Governor James Orengo, Governor Gladys Wanga, and Professor Anyang’ Nyong’o. Whoever takes up the mantle must ensure Raila’s dream for the Luo nation and for Kenya lives on,” Bonyo said.

He called for peace as the community mourns, saying the goal should remain the liberation and empowerment of the Luo people within a united Kenya.

Meanwhile, Senator Oburu Odinga reaffirmed his commitment to uphold his late brother’s legacy, promising not to let down the ODM movement.

Speaking during Raila Odinga’s requiem mass at Nyayo Stadium, Oburu confirmed he had officially taken over as interim ODM leader, pledging to carry forward the vision and ideals that defined Raila’s decades-long political journey.
