Six lions in the Oleisukut Conservancy, Maasai Mara, narrowly escaped death after a suspected poisoning incident, thanks to a swift response from veterinary experts under the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).

In a statement shared on Monday, September 29, 2025, KWS confirmed that the lions were found weak and disoriented, showing classic symptoms of poisoning. An urgent call to the KWS veterinary unit triggered an immediate rescue mission.

“Our veterinary team responded swiftly, administering emergency treatment, stabilising the pride, and relocating them to safety,” the agency said.

Recovery and Monitoring

Following treatment, the pride was moved to a secure area for further observation. KWS later confirmed that four lions have fully recovered, while two remain under close monitoring but are stable and improving.

Photos and videos shared by KWS captured the gravity of the situation, showing lions lying frail in a thicket—one appearing motionless, while another weakly shook its head with little body movement.

Investigations Underway

KWS announced that investigations into the source of the suspected poisoning are ongoing, with officers working closely with conservancy management and local communities to prevent recurrence.

“Kenya Wildlife Service remains steadfast in its mandate to conserve and protect Kenya’s iconic species. We reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding our wildlife heritage for current and future generations,” the statement added.

Protecting Kenya’s Heritage

The incident underscores the vulnerabilities facing Kenya’s wildlife, particularly lions, which are among the country’s most iconic and globally admired species. KWS emphasized its commitment to preserving biodiversity under the campaign hashtag #TunzaMaliYako.
