Somalia’s government has announced significant progress in its fight against the Al-Qaida-linked Al-Shabaab militant group, reclaiming territory that had been under insurgent control for nearly two decades.

Liberated Areas

State Minister for Defense Omar Ali Abdi confirmed that several strategic locations in Lower Shabelle have been retaken, including Jilib Marka, Gendershe, and Dhanaane.

“These places acted as their courts where they would call anyone they wanted to extort money from, especially the residents of Mogadishu, and thanks to God we have finally managed to control them, thanks to the Somali National Army,” Abdi said.

The reclaimed areas had long served as strongholds for Al-Shabaab, enabling the group to exert influence over communities through intimidation and extortion.

Role of U.S.-Backed Airstrikes

Analysts note that U.S.-backed drone and airstrikes have played a crucial role in weakening Al-Shabaab’s capabilities. Security expert Abdullahi Ahmed Ali explained that the strikes destroyed ammunition, food, and water storage facilities, severely undermining the group’s infantry forces.

“Without drones and air attacks, that would not have been possible,” Ali said, highlighting the importance of aerial surveillance and precision strikes in locating militant hideouts.

Al-Shabaab’s Decline

Al-Shabaab emerged as a dominant insurgent force nearly 20 years ago, at one point controlling much of southern and central Somalia, as well as parts of Mogadishu. While the group remains active, its territorial grip has weakened significantly due to sustained military pressure.

Security Transition

The gains come at a pivotal moment as African Union peacekeeping forces continue their gradual drawdown, leaving Somalia to assume greater responsibility for its own security. The government’s ability to reclaim and hold territory will be a critical test of its capacity to maintain stability without heavy reliance on external forces.

Conclusion

Somalia’s recent advances against Al-Shabaab mark a turning point in the country’s long struggle with insurgency. While challenges remain, the combination of national military efforts and international support has delivered tangible results, offering hope for a more secure future.
