Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have committed to a three-month humanitarian truce, paving the way for peace talks with the Sudanese Army.

In a video address on Monday, RSF commander Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo reaffirmed the group’s dedication to the truce and urged international mediators to pressure the military into accepting the proposal.

The mediators, collectively known as the Quad which includes the U.S., Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates have been engaged for over two years in efforts to end the fighting and restore Sudan’s stalled democratic transition following the 2021 military coup.

However, Sudan’s top general, Abdel-Fattah Burhan, rejected the ceasefire, accusing the mediators of bias in their approach to resolving the conflict.

The war, which erupted in April 2023 due to a power struggle between the RSF and the Sudanese Army, has resulted in over 40,000 deaths a number believed to be underreported by rights groups and has triggered a severe humanitarian crisis, displacing more than 14 million people.
