Eldoret, Kenya – The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has confirmed the tragic deaths of three recruits during a scheduled training activity at the Defence Forces Recruits Training School (DFRTS) in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, on Thursday, January 29, 2026.
In a statement released on Friday, January 30, 2026, the KDF revealed that the recruits developed medical complications while participating in a routine endurance exercise.
“Immediate medical assistance was provided on-site, and the affected recruits were evacuated to Eldoret Regional Hospital for advanced care. Despite the efforts of attending medical teams, the recruits were pronounced dead,” the statement read.

The KDF confirmed that the next of kin have been formally notified and assured that the military is providing all necessary support to the bereaved families.
“We are providing all necessary support and assistance to the families of the deceased. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, loved ones, fellow recruits, and colleagues during this difficult time,” the forces added.

The military has initiated a thorough investigation in line with standard procedures to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Findings from the inquiry will inform any measures needed to enhance safety and welfare during training exercises.

This tragedy follows a similar incident in 2024, when Francis Wachira, 25, collapsed and later died during a military recruitment exercise at the General Kassan Stadium in Kirinyaga County. At the time, local authorities confirmed that Wachira had enrolled for the exercise in hopes of joining the KDF.
