At least six people lost their lives in a fatal crowd crush during a Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise at Accra’s El-Wak Sports Stadium.
The incident occurred early Wednesday morning, before the official start of the event, when a surge of applicants overwhelmed security and forced their way through the stadium gates.
Thousands of young Ghanaians had gathered, driven by the opportunity to join the military amid a youth unemployment rate of around 13%. The recruitment deadline had been extended by a week to accommodate applicants who faced challenges with online registration, contributing to the unexpectedly high turnout.
Several individuals sustained injuries and are currently receiving emergency care at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra. Authorities have secured the area, and calm has been restored as the recruitment exercise continues under heightened security measures.
The Ghana Armed Forces expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and pledged a comprehensive investigation to determine the causes of the tragedy and prevent similar incidents in the future.
This heartbreaking event underscores the high demand for military employment in Ghana, reflecting the broader challenges faced by young people navigating a competitive job market.
