The United States Embassy in Nairobi has confirmed a temporary suspension of certain services following the ongoing US government shutdown.

In a notice issued on October 1, 2025, through its official social media channels, the embassy announced that regular updates will be paused until full operations resume. Only urgent safety and security information will be shared during this period.

Despite the suspension, the embassy reassured the public that essential services—including passport processing and visa services—will continue “as the situation permits.” Kenyans and other foreign nationals seeking US services were advised to check the official embassy website for the latest updates on service availability.

The partial pause comes as Washington grapples with a funding lapse after the Republican-controlled Senate failed to pass a continuing resolution to extend government spending. The shutdown has forced many US agencies and foreign missions worldwide to scale back operations.

This is the first government shutdown since 2018–2019, which was the longest in US history at 35 days. Thousands of government employees, both in the US and overseas, are now facing disruptions.

While the duration of the current shutdown remains uncertain, the embassy emphasized that emergency communications will remain a top priority.
