Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has brushed off recent criticism from Wayne Rooney, who accused the Reds of lacking leadership during their recent slump in form. Van Dijk described the former England striker’s comments as “lazy criticism,” insisting that Liverpool’s struggles are a collective issue, not a failure of individual leadership.

Liverpool, who lifted the Premier League title last season in Arne Slot’s debut campaign, began the 2025/26 season strongly with five straight league wins. However, a string of defeats capped by a fourth consecutive league loss at Brentford has seen them slip behind in the title race.

Following that defeat, Rooney suggested that Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah had “not really led that team this season.”

Van Dijk hit back after Liverpool returned to winning ways against Aston Villa on Saturday.

“I didn’t hear him last year,” Van Dijk said. “It doesn’t hurt me, but I think it’s a bit of a lazy criticism. It’s easy to blame others, but we’re all working hard together to turn this around. When things go well, you don’t hear that kind of talk.”

The Dutch defender added that he holds no grudge against Rooney, calling him a “legend” and “a big player who inspired many,” but emphasized that pundits often focus on negativity as part of their job.

“He has his opinion and we have to deal with it. There’s no hard feelings. I don’t take it personally.”

Rooney Stands by His Comments

Responding on his podcast, Rooney clarified that his remarks were not personal and maintained his stance.

“I’ve got full respect for Virgil. He’s been one of the best defenders in the world over the last five years,” Rooney said. “But my job as a pundit is to give my honest opinion. I don’t think he’s been at his best this season and I stand by that.”

Liverpool Focused on Turning the Tide

Despite the dip in form, Liverpool remain third in the Premier League, seven points behind leaders Arsenal, as they head into a decisive week featuring clashes with Real Madrid in the Champions League and Manchester City in the league.

Van Dijk dismissed speculation that manager Arne Slot is under pressure, insisting the team remains united.

“We don’t play at a club that makes rash decisions,” Van Dijk said. “We believe we can work our way out of this together. As long as we stay humble, keep working, and believe in ourselves, we’ll get back to where we want to be.”
