Kwale, Kenya – A total of 327 couples from Kwale, Mombasa, and Kilifi counties solemnized their marriages in a colorful mass wedding ceremony held at Kwale Baraza Park.

The annual event, now in its sixth year, was presided over by acting Chief Kadhi Sukyan Omar Hassan and comes just days before the start of the holy month of Ramadan.

A Community Initiative

The mass wedding is an initiative spearheaded by Matuga Member of Parliament Kassim Tandaza in partnership with Bahari FM under the Royal Media Services banner, through its popular segment “Harusi ya Enzi.”

Tandaza explained that the program is designed to ease the financial burden of traditional wedding ceremonies, where families often demand high bride prices before allowing their daughters to marry.

“The mass wedding is meant to alleviate the high costs of wedding ceremonies where brides’ parents insist on huge amounts of bride prices,” Tandaza said.

Religious and Legal Importance

Chief Kadhi Sukyan Omar Hassan emphasized the importance of registering marriages in line with religious teachings, noting that legalized unions help avert challenges that may arise from unregistered marriages.

“Registering marriages is in line with religious teachings to avert any challenges that may arise from non-legalized marriages,” he said.

Conclusion

The Kwale mass wedding continues to stand out as a unique cultural and religious initiative, offering couples a dignified and affordable way to begin married life. With hundreds of couples tying the knot each year, the event has become a symbol of unity, tradition, and community support across the coastal counties.
