Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi is assessing significant losses after several of his businesses near Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi were vandalised during an overnight operation on Wednesday.

Witnesses said police officers arrived at the site shortly after midnight and used teargas and live rounds to disperse people in the area before demolition activities began. According to those present, bulldozers were deployed and damaged property indiscriminately, including vehicles that were parked on the premises.

“The bulldozers were running over everything, including cars that were parked here,” said one witness, Paul Kilonzo.

Among the affected premises are a car wash, a car dealership, a car parts shop and other adjacent businesses. More than five vehicles were reportedly vandalised during the operation.

Business owners and residents in the area have strongly condemned the incident, alleging that the destruction was politically motivated. They claim neighbouring properties were left untouched, raising concerns about selective enforcement.

“Property worth millions of shillings has been destroyed. There was no notice issued, and this appears to be politically driven. Those behind this are clearly targeting Governor Wamatangi,” said Isaac Mbugua, a local businessman.

Governor Wamatangi later arrived at the scene to inspect the damage as questions mounted over the legality and motive behind the overnight demolitions.
