Nairobi, Kenya – The High Court on Wednesday heard fresh testimony in the ongoing trial of John Matara, who is charged with the murder of Scarlet Wahu. Investigating officer Alex Chokera detailed items recovered from the scene where Wahu’s body was discovered, shedding light on the circumstances surrounding her death.
Evidence Recovered
Chokera told the court that detectives found several personal items believed to belong to the deceased, including:
- A bra
- A pair of panties
- Shoes
Investigators also collected used and unused condoms, a syringe, capsules, and tablets from the apartment. The body was later escorted to the City Mortuary.
CCTV Footage and Witness Accounts
Reviewing CCTV footage from the apartment building, Chokera said he observed an individual running away from the premises. Further analysis revealed that a man wearing a black cap had occupied the unit where the body was found.
The short-stay rental owner confirmed to investigators that the unit had been booked by John Matara, referred by another businesswoman who managed similar rentals.
Chokera added that the house was locked from the inside with a steel door, and no key was recovered at the scene.
A watchman from a neighboring property testified that he saw a man leaving the house in a hurry. He alerted the caretaker, and together they noticed blood stains outside the door. The watchman further indicated that the individual exited through the back door of the apartment.
Hospital Connection
While still at the scene, Chokera said he received information that a person linked to the matter was receiving treatment at a South B Hospital. He proceeded to the facility, where he interviewed the watchman and the nurse on duty.
