The United Opposition has announced that its candidate for the Mombasa governorship race in the 2027 General Election will be Nyali Member of Parliament Mohammed Ali.
Endorsement Announcement
Speaking during a roadside rally in Roysambu on Sunday, Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua confirmed that the faction will back Ali’s bid. He noted that discussions are ongoing with other leaders, including Kalonzo Musyoka, to determine the party ticket Ali will run on.
“As United Opposition we want to have our candidate for Mombasa governorship. Kalonzo Musyoka, myself and other leaders will discuss the party which our candidate will use,” Gachagua said.
Ali’s Commitment
Accepting the endorsement, Ali pledged to confront entrenched political interests in Mombasa.
“We have agreed that I ensure that I deal with all cartels and I bring the vote home and we move together,” he stated.
“The time for the youth to stand up is here. We have leaders who will lead us with wisdom. All those spreading propaganda should know that Gachagua and Kalonzo have agreed that I be the lion to roar in Mombasa.”
Ali recently left the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), citing intolerance and frustration within the party as he positioned himself for the governorship.
Political Context
Ali has clashed with UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar, who is also eyeing the Mombasa governorship, accusing him of sidelining independent-minded leaders and promoting factional politics.
In October 2025, Ali posted photos of himself meeting Gachagua and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, captioned: “Some things are better left unannounced, because they are meant to be discovered. Happy to be sipping tea in the company of great, wise men.”
Looking Ahead
The endorsement signals the United Opposition’s intent to consolidate support in Mombasa ahead of the 2027 elections. With Ali’s candidacy, the coalition is positioning itself to challenge UDA’s dominance in the coastal region, setting the stage for a competitive gubernatorial race.
