French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Tuesday that the country’s flagship aircraft carrier, Charles de Gaulle, along with its air assets and escorting frigates, is being sent to the Mediterranean in response to the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
In a televised address, Macron emphasized that the deployment aims to secure vital maritime routes and protect Europe’s economic interests amid soaring energy prices and disruptions caused by the United States and Israel’s military operations against Iran.
“We have taken the initiative to build a coalition in order to pool the necessary resources, including military ones, so that traffic can be restored and secured in these sea lanes that are essential to the global economy,” Macron stated.
Securing Strategic Maritime Routes
The French president noted that key shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, the Suez Canal, and the Red Sea, face threats from the widening conflict. To bolster regional security, Macron is also sending a frigate and air defence assets to Cyprus, following Iranian drone strikes on the British Royal Air Force base at Akrotiri.
French forces have reportedly intercepted drones to protect the airspace of Gulf allies, highlighting the escalating risk to critical infrastructure and commercial shipping lanes.
Defence Commitments and Military Assets
Macron underlined that France’s defence agreements with Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates obligate France to respond to retaliatory attacks from Tehran.
French military presence in the region includes:
- Rafale fighter jets deployed over the UAE to secure naval and air bases.
- 900 personnel across air, naval, and land bases in the UAE, equipped with Rafales, Leclerc tanks, and Caesar artillery.
- 700 troops serving with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
The Rafale aircraft are stationed at Al-Dhafra Air Base near Abu Dhabi. Macron also reported that two French bases have sustained “limited strikes causing material damage” since the start of the conflict.
Macron’s Position on the Conflict
While Macron held Iran responsible for retaliatory actions in the region, he also criticized the US-Israeli military operations, stating they were conducted outside international law. He urged for a swift resolution to the strikes while reaffirming France’s commitment to protecting regional allies and ensuring maritime security.
The deployment of the Charles de Gaulle and additional military assets signals France’s proactive stance in safeguarding critical trade routes and supporting its defence obligations in the Middle East amidst rising tensions.
