NEW DELHI, India — Adani Group's airport business is set to raise about $1 billion from a group of global investors, including Singapore's Temasek and US investment giant BlackRock, as the conglomerate moves to expand and modernise its airport infrastructure.
Adani Group said Wednesday that investors will acquire a 5.54% stake in Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), one of India's largest private airport operators.
The transaction values the airport business at a pre-money equity valuation of about $18 billion, according to a company statement.
The investment is described by Adani as one of the largest primary equity investments by financial institutions into India's airport infrastructure sector.
Investment to Be Completed in Three Tranches
Under the agreement, the investors will subscribe to newly issued equity shares in Adani Airport through three tranches, with the final tranche expected to be completed by July 2027.
The proceeds will be used to support the expansion and modernisation of airport infrastructure as Adani seeks to strengthen its position in India's rapidly growing aviation market.
The funds will also support the expansion of related businesses, including ground-handling operations.
Arun Bansal, chief executive of Adani Airport, said the company intends to build AAHL into a global leader in airport infrastructure.
“We will continue to build capabilities within AAHL to scale it into the world's largest airports platform,” Bansal said.
He pointed to India's growing consumer spending power, increasing demand for air travel and the development of airport-linked commercial areas in major cities as key opportunities for the business.
India's Aviation Sector Faces Rapid Growth
The investment comes as India's aviation sector prepares for significant expansion in passenger numbers.
Indian airlines are expected to carry an additional 425 million passengers by 2044, more than doubling the number recorded last year, according to industry projections cited in reports.
However, the rapid growth has raised concerns over whether India's aviation infrastructure will be able to keep pace with demand.
The country's two largest airlines, Air India and IndiGo, have recently faced regulatory and safety challenges, placing the wider aviation system under increased scrutiny.
The pressure has highlighted the need for investment in airports, aircraft, passenger facilities and supporting infrastructure as air travel becomes increasingly accessible to India's expanding middle class.
Global Investors Back Adani's Airport Expansion
The participation of major global investors such as Temasek and BlackRock represents a significant vote of confidence in Adani's airport business.
The investment also comes as the wider Adani Group seeks to strengthen relationships with international investors following years of regulatory and legal scrutiny.
Billionaire founder Gautam Adani recently resolved US bribery allegations, a development that has attracted renewed attention to the conglomerate's ability to access international capital.
The latest airport investment could therefore provide fresh momentum for Adani's infrastructure ambitions while giving global financial institutions exposure to India's expanding aviation market.
Adani Targets Global Airport Leadership
AAHL has emerged as a major part of Adani Group's infrastructure portfolio, with the company pursuing an expansion strategy that goes beyond traditional airport operations.
The group is investing in airport infrastructure while developing commercial activities around airports, including retail, hospitality, logistics and other cityside businesses.
Bansal said these developments could become important economic catalysts in India's major urban centres.
With passenger numbers expected to rise sharply over the next two decades, Adani is betting that airports will become increasingly important hubs for transportation, commerce and urban development.
The $1 billion capital raise gives the company additional resources to pursue that strategy, while the involvement of international investors underscores the growing attractiveness of India's airport infrastructure sector.
