British Man Pleads Guilty to Drugging and Raping Wife Over Two Decades

A British man has pleaded guilty to 60 offences involving his wife, including drugging and raping her over a period spanning more than two decades.

The man, who is in his 60s, appeared at a court in northwest England on Monday. He cannot be named because doing so could identify his wife, who is legally protected as the alleged victim of the offences.

He had previously pleaded guilty to other sexual offences against his wife.

The man had been due to stand trial alongside 12 other defendants accused of conspiring to sexually abuse the same woman while she was unconscious.

The other defendants deny the allegations. A 13th man previously pleaded guilty to conspiring to drug and rape the victim.

Husband Admits 60 Offences

During Monday's hearing, the husband admitted to 60 offences dating back to 2004.

The offences include administering a substance with the intention of stupefying or overpowering his wife.

The case involves allegations of drug-facilitated sexual abuse, in which substances are used to impair a person's ability to consent or resist.

The allegations against the other defendants will be tested in court during their upcoming trial.

The co-defendants, aged between 28 and 73, include a paramedic and a former football coach. They are expected to appear before a criminal court in Manchester in the coming weeks.

Growing Attention on Drug-Facilitated Sexual Abuse

The case is the latest in a series of criminal investigations and prosecutions in the UK involving drug-facilitated sexual abuse.

The issue has received international attention following the high-profile case of Dominique Pelicot in France.

Pelicot was convicted after being accused of drugging his then-wife, Gisèle Pelicot, and arranging for other men to sexually abuse her while she was incapacitated over a period of years.

The case prompted widespread discussion in France and internationally about consent, sexual violence and the use of drugs to facilitate abuse.

Other UK Cases Under Investigation

The latest British case comes amid several other prosecutions involving allegations of sexual abuse against unconscious or incapacitated partners.

Last week, a man in London pleaded guilty to encouraging other men through an online group chat to sexually abuse their unconscious partners and share images of the abuse.

Another man is also due to be sentenced later this week in central England after pleading guilty in July to 32 sexual offences against his girlfriend. The offences allegedly occurred while she was drugged or asleep.

The cases have highlighted concerns about the use of drugs and digital platforms in facilitating sexual abuse, as well as the challenges faced by victims seeking justice.

The Manchester proceedings involving the 12 remaining defendants are expected to begin in the coming weeks.
